Aha ha ha! This is a good info exchange done by the US expats. I always do the similar thing. If you go to another country, find a place where you fit in. If you do not understand the local custom or language, at least nature will understand you.

Similarly, when I live in other country, I learn the local custom and tradition. No matter how stupid it is, try to understand them better. But in this case, nature got him first through surfing the waves of the Pacific Ocean.

Yeah, doing that will improve your chances of learning the new language and customs of the place. Many countries have different ways to greet others and so learning the language is good move for a new person. Someone who lives afar can try some common slangs online, that will improve the situation.
